Nobody chooses this club the way they choose most things in life. It gets handed to you, usually before you're old enough to have any say in the matter. And then one day you're the one doing the handing.
There's a particular kind of feeling that comes with setting up a tiny jersey in a room that isn't even fully furnished yet — knowing full well the kid it belongs to has no idea what any of it means, and won't for years. You do it anyway. Not because it changes anything today, but because you're planting something that you already know, from your own experience, has a real chance of growing into one of the steadiest things in a person's life.
I don't think it's really about football at that age. It's about belonging to something before you're even old enough to understand what belonging means. By the time a kid is actually watching matches and understanding what's happening on the pitch, the deeper thing — the sense that this is *ours*, that this is part of the family, not just a team we happen to watch — is already settled. That part doesn't get taught later. It gets absorbed early, or it doesn't quite land the same way.
Somewhere down the line, that kid will have their own version of standing in the Kop, or watching a match from wherever life's put them, feeling that exact pull I've spent this whole channel trying to put into words. And some small part of that will trace back to a jersey on a chair in a room, set up long before it could mean anything — a decision made early enough that by the time it matters, it just feels like it was always true.
That's the whole point of starting young. Not to rush anything. Just to make sure the door's already open when the time actually comes.
